January 11, 2009 — David Chiu was elected Nov. 4 to represent the district that includes Chinatown, North Beach, Russian Hill and the Polk Street area.  Thursday, he was sworn in as the district’s first Chinese American representative and voted in at the board’s inaugural meeting as its first Chinese American president.

He will serve in the powerful position – an unusual role for a freshman supervisor – for two years. During that time, Chiu will help shape the board’s legislative agenda, make committee assignments and appoint city residents to commissions.
